At the start of April last year, I did the touristy thing and went on a bicycle tour of Soweto. Part of it felt like poverty tourism, but a lot of it didn’t and since I’m from Mitchells Plain and it seems like many parts of ‘the Plain’ are similar to Soweto(middle class in places, extremely poor in others, working class in others etc).

While the tour guides were telling us about the FNB towers and the Soweto Derby, a group of young kids came running by with these cars made out of soft drink bottles, wire and cans.

While this wasn’t taken in an impoverished area, I like the juxtaposition of the care-free child with his car that was made with garbage and the ABSA bank sign in the top right.
